Pearl CC Golf Tournament
First, I wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving holiday. I am thankful for each
and every one of you for another great year. Mark your calendars for
January 21st, 2006 6:00 PM for our banquet in Hale Ohana. More details
will be forthcoming. The 21st will also be our first tournament scheduled
at Pearl CC again. It will be a great day of golf.
Well, here is the kind of day it turned out to be, only 2 players netted
par and only 9 of 23 players shot gross scores under 100. I knew by the
3rd hole I was in for a long day. Nevertheless, my cart partner Jim Becker
was his ever jolly self doing his best to keep my spirits up while my
other playing partner Jim Hickerson, not having his best day, kept efficiently
grinding it out to his net 75 to capture 3rd place. Two of our clubs
low handicappers turned in net 72’s to compete for 1st & 2nd
place. Tournaments like these are difficult for low handicappers to win
and this is only the 2nd time this year someone with a handicap under
19 has won. Second place due to his bogie on starting hole #10 goes to
Pastor Jay. First place due to his par on hole #10 goes to a well deserving,
good man and good golfer, Ted Otaguro. Ted also birdied the last hole which allowed
him to get to the tie breaker. Ted has turned in a net 66 and a net 68 in 2 previous
tournaments this year, neither good enough for first place. It goes to show you,
good things happen to good people that continue to persevere. Congratulations
Ted but watch out because Jay is persevering for his first win of the year and
is already looking forward to a rematch next month.
Other Highlights:

Kapolei Golf Tournament
Our
day started with a light drizzle in the area and some beautiful crisp rainbows
that stayed with us for the first 3 or 4 holes. I stopped several times in awe
of the beauty and the promise of God’s Rainbows. It was a great day of
golf for many in this, our ninth tournament of our third year. Shawn Ball has
played in 7 tournaments this year and for the 5th time finished in the top ten
with a third place finish, netting a 69. Pastor Sim having recovered from a serious
shoulder injury found the zone, netting a cool 67 with a birdie and 2 closest
to the pin shots to capture 2nd place. Sim was in Group 1 and it looked like
his net 67 would take it all, but wouldn’t you know that our last group
came in and lo and behold a net 65 appeared. One of our charter members put together
his best round and took sole possession of 1st place, well deserved congratulations
to brother John Ball. John has played in 27 of our 34 tournaments. All of these
gentlemen will see reduced handicaps in their next tournament.

Royal Kunia Golf Tournament
A
beautiful day at Royal Kunia. Mike Carr was back from vacation and his son’s
wedding. He shared a story about how his son had a golf outing for some of the
wedding party and naturally his son got a “Hole In One” gift during
the round. God led Murray to the course just in time by the power of group prayer,
and Ted Otaguro shot a lights out 79. In spite of that great score Ted’s
net 68 came in 2nd to Lucinda Pyles net 66. For the second month in a row Lucinda
has taken 1st place honors, even with a 2 stroke courtesy cut on her handicap.
She is in the ZONE. We have her where we want her because she is now feeling
embarrassed by her success. Fortunately for the rest of us, she and John will
be off island for our September tournament. The greens were in great shape but
seemed slow as I left several putts short. Third place went to yours truly by
virtue of a tie breaker at net 71. My par on the first hole stole the prize from
Jim Hickerson and Bobbie Merrill. We have room for lots of players in September – see
below. Sign up soon and let’s set a record.
Other Highlights:
CTP’s: Ted Otaguro, 5; Ty Aldinger, 8; Hyon Weber, 13; Bruce Patterson,

Hawaii Prince Golf Tournament
Hawaii Prince once again proved to be a nemesis course for me, and I really felt
like this time was going to be different. Oh well!!! Contrary to last month when
we only had 2 gals this month we had 9, four of which finished in our top ten
and one of which won the tournament with a great net score of 67. Lucinda Pyles
received the news with surprise and much delight and couldn’t wait to share
her good fortune with her 3 sons. And wouldn’t you know it, none of them
were at their respective homes and she could only leave voicemails. Way to go
Lucinda. Her nearest competitors both netted 71’s with the tie breaker
giving Shawn Ball second place and Hyon Weber third place. Shawn started with
a par on the first hole and it pays off to have a good start. Shawn & Hyon
both birdied the same hole as well, see below. Hyon did confide to me that she
wasn’t really awake until about the 3rd or 4th hole. Bobbie Merrill captured
4th place giving the gals 3 out of the top four finishes. Super effort by our
gals.
Other Highlights:

Kapolei Golf Tournament
A
nice turnout of 21 players even though summer travels have taken priority
for many. But hey girls, only two of you made it and one was a new
member Vicky Wiley. Welcome Vicky. Jan Higa was our o ther gal and
Jan represented the gender well managing a close 4th place finish (net
71) only one stroke away from the 2nd and 3rd place finishers (John
Frauens & Ted Otaguro) both shooting net 70.
John won 2nd place by virtue of the tie breaker system. However, Ted holed a
fairway shot on the 11th hole for an eagle and also carded a couple of birdies.
Way to go Ted. First place goes to ringer Doug Auten (see picture below), netting
an impressive 67. This was Doug’s 2nd outing with us and he will now
see a huge adjustment in his handicap. All three of these guys were in Group
1 and a fourth guy in the group, Bill Sheehan had a pretty good round as
well, shooting a GROSS 78 (net 72) with 2 closest to the pins and one birdie.

Pearl Country Club Golf Tournament
What
a great weekend. My thanks go out to both those who played on Saturday and
to those who sacrificed for the “For Such A Time” banquet
at the convention center. We had 17 players allowing us 4 groups and
3 of the players in group 4 were non members/attendees at FPC so it
could not have worked out any better. Those in the first 3 groups were
able to do both golf and celebrate at the banquet.
I believe God may have taken exception to the Presbyterian one baptism tradition.
By the end of the first 3 holes I felt and looked like the steady gentle rain
had performed a full immersion baptism on me. As expected after baptism, the
heavens opened and the rest of the morning was blessed on the beautiful fairways/greens
of Pearl Country Club.
For most of us the course played difficult. Only one player, Bill Sheehan finished
at par or better and it confirms that regardless of rainy and wet conditions
a solid low handicapper knows how to adjust to score well. Bill recorded a
40’s
on both the front and back nine which netted him a 71, good for first place and
$15. Now just for comparison, Patrick “Sheehan” shot a 76 on Sunday,
after posting a tournament low of 62 on Thursday, finishing in last place collecting
$11,032 at the Colonial Tournament in Fort Worth, TX. Our second place winner
was John Frauens netting a 75 and third place went to Mike Zavada netting a
76.
I was informed that our fourth group had an interesting story to share, one that
might be of great value to the rest of us. With 5 holes to go, Brother Jay Jarman
who had been struggling some with his game discovered one of his shoes had lost
its sole. Being a Pastor and concerned about lost souls he removed his shoes
and finished his round barefooted. He began with his longest and straightest
drive of the day and recorded 3 pars in the last 5 holes. Shoeless Jay Jarman
might be starting a new trend in order to save soles and par holes.
Other Highlights:
CTP’s: Jo Miyakawa, 3; Bill Sheehan, 13; Ty Young 16; #6 hole escaped,
no winner.
Birdies: Jim Becker, 7
Low Gross: Bill Sheehan, 80;
Net Par or better: Bill Sheehan, 71

Luana Hills Golf Tournament
We
had a great turnout, our second largest with 30 players. Luana Hills
proved to get the best of most of us. A difficult target course allowed
only 4 players to post a net 72 par or better. Most net scores were
80 and above. First place honors went to Dr. John Frauens who used
his surgical skills to a carve out a net 69. Mike Zavada posted a net
71 for second. Mike was in group one and was in contention for 3 of
the 4 closest to the pin contests. Third place went to Doug Auten playing
with us for his first time. Doug netted a 72 using the Callaway handicap
system. Congratulations also to Anne Frauens, representing the ladies
as a top ten finisher on this difficult course. Other
Highlights:

Guests:
Don Parker and Ted Diggs were invited guests of Ron Mathieu . Don
is an FPC Elder and a very good golfer. Ted’s ship was docked in Pearl Harbor, Ted is a
Navy Commander.
Taylor Roberts, son of Ken and Linda Roberts joined us for a second time. Playing
in the last group Taylor was able to witness the integrity of his father who
turned in all of the closest to the pin markers with “Ken Roberts” as
the winner on all four par three’s. My suspicions were confirmed when I
saw the wry smile on Ken’s face as I pondered the authenticity of this
special accomplishment.

next tournament will overlap with the all church “For Such A Time” Special
Event at the Hawaii Convention Center which starts at 11:30 AM beginning with
a lunch. Our first tee time is 7 AM and if we have 6 groups, our last group
will probably finish around 12:45 PM. Players and guests that are not FPC members
will be placed in the later groups so all FPC members and regular attenders
can leave as soon as they have completed their rounds.

Waikele Golf Tournament
It didn’t look good with heavy rains on Friday and a serious threat of
rain for Saturday. Although Saturday morning started off clear it began to rain
pretty steady beginning about 45 minutes prior to our tee time of 7:05 AM. All
27 players arrived, checked in and stood by for the starting call. What a gallant
group of golfers, ready to play rain or shine. I appealed to everyone to just
give up and go home, but “No Way” was the unanimous reply. “We
bought all this fancy play in the rain golf stuff and you can’t deny us
the opportunity like this,” was their cry. What could I say, but “Just
Do It” Nike charge. We approached the first tee with a blowing drizzling
rain in our face and off we went. I am so proud of the few, the brave, the Marines
of the PGA that showed up and honored their commitment; Despite the elements,
miraculously, all 27 players shot scores under their handicaps, but the real
highlight was the Hole In One by Arlean Hamada on the 145 yard Par 3 5th hole.
Of course Arlean in her humble manner just high fived everyone and took it in
stride as one more blessing in her life. Way to go Arlean…….. “April
Fool”
Now for the rest of the story; We really did get rained out for the first time
in our 2+ years of play. Ironically, we are seeing heavy rains affecting several
of the other PGA tournaments this year as well. Waikele was kind enough to refund
everyone their green fees. Many stayed to enjoy some fellowship and breakfast.
Again, my thanks to all who braved the weather and showed up ready to play. Hopefully
the rest of the year will provide us with pleasant days for golfing.
Humor: “A golfer’s diet; Live on greens as much as possible”
Next Tournament: Saturday 4/23/05 at Luana Hills Golf Course; Check-in with me

only. Please confirm early. 18 players are already confirmed.

Mililani Golf Tournament
A
WOW experience for our brother Ron Mathieu as he broke 90 for the first
time ever, thank goodness he showed up at the right course. Way to
go Ron. Friday evening strong winds accompanied by rains coming down
in buckets had me a bit skeptical about a successful Saturday tournament.
Mililani had been impacted by the many rains we have had over the
recent few months, the greens were not in very good shape. Sim led
us in prayer and incorporated a moment of silence for our wonderful
brother Henry Naganuma who had passed away only a few days earlier.
Henry netted 62 at Mililani for first place in May 2003. This tournament
we had 7 groups (28 players). A steady rain began about the time
our first group completed their 18th hole. Despite the rain and poor
putting surfaces our all managed to finish their rounds with some
amazing results. Nine birdies were recorded and nine players posted
scores that beat or equaled their handicaps. Ted Otaguro started
his round with 5 pars, slipped in a bogey and then 3 more pars for
a sizzling 37 and finished with a great round of 79, netting him
a 66, but only good enough for 3rd place. He was edged out by his
playing partner George Fujiwara (welcome back Fujiwara’s) who netted a 65 for 2nd and Ron’s 88 for
a net 63 took overall honors. Ron played in group 5 which battled a steady rain
for at least the last four or five holes. Shawn Ball (68) & Jim Hickerson
(69) also had good rounds. Kudo’s also to brother Bob Curtis for posting
his best round ever with our club, almost breaking 100.

Royal Kunia Golf Tournament
A big day for our golf family, a tournament in the morning and a banquet in the
evening.
First, the banquet. Great evening of food, fellowship and fun in Hale Ohana.
The putting contest winners were PGA Member Brad Bassett & Non PGA Member
Kamakoa Page, guest of Shawn Ball. A Birdie Trophy was presented to Leighton
Miyakawa for his 6 birdies in 2004 plus a beautiful painting called Birds of
Paradise for his Player of the Year accomplishment graciously donated by artist
Angela Mathieu. Leighton also received recognition on the wall plaque as our
PGA Player of the Year. The plaque will be located at FPC for all to observe.
The plaque also shows the total dollar contributions the PGA awarded to charities.
Finally and most importantly my heartfelt recognition to the key people that
made this banquet special; John Deliso, Juan Paez and Yuko Lee for Set Up; my
lovely wife Patty for heart and soul table decorations; Ty Young for efforts
to welcome everyone to the banquet and assure our financial success; Ken Roberts
for patient and thorough administration of the putting contest; Jim Becker, my
special accountability partner for jokes and Master of Ceremony willingness;
and last but not least, Ted and Gerri Otaguro for incredible servant effort to
plan, pick up and transport, present, serve the delicious menu of food, beverage
and desert and then clean up, with help from many willing others. WOW….THANKS
Everybody
And now the tournament, the course was in very good shape and the scores were
some of the best we have ever had, 11 of our 25 members shot net par or better
and 11 birdies were recorded. Four players had multiple birdies. An outstanding
low net of 60 was posted by one of our newest members, Mike Carr. Congratulations
Mike, wait until you see your new handicap. I was asked if this was our club
record and after research I found Jay Jarman posted a net 59 on 8/16/03 at Kunia
(Hawaii Country Club). The next closest were net 62’s by Brad Bassett and
Henry Naganuma. Second place went to Shawn Ball, net 66 and posting his best
gross score with the PGA. Third place and keeping the ladies placing in the money
for a second month in a row was Marilyn Gottesman, netting a 67. Here is a noteworthy
item in my opinion, Bill Sheehan shot a gross 37 on the back nine and that included
a triple bogey.
A handicap policy used in many clubs invokes a courtesy cut of 2 strokes to the
tournament winners handicap in each of the players next 2 tournaments. After
completing 2 additional tournaments the courtesy cut is removed. We have incorporated
that policy beginning 2005.
