Eunice Sim
O
ur new Assistant Worship Leader

What brought you to First Pres?
For the past year or so, I'd been hoping that God would give me an opportunity to serve in a worship-related capacity and so when this opportunity came up, it felt clear that this was the way to go. Plus, I'd half-seriously been praying over the last 5 years that I would have a good reason to move to Hawaii. I didn't realize God was actually listening!

How long have you been at First Pres?
A little more than two weeks.

How are you involved in First Pres?
I help Roz with all her music/worship-related responsibilities and Jordan with Nightlife, where I lead worship most Sunday evenings, with my newly assembled, rockin' band.

How did you first get involved with worship leading?
Since I was a kid, I'd always been involved in some music capacity at church because I could hold a tune. I was once cast as a singing songbook in a children's musical.... I believe I was a giant pink book called Melody. When I was in Youth Group, I realized how much I loved worshiping God through music and joined the worship team as a keyboardist and vocalist. When I moved to Boston, I took up guitar playing because I couldn't afford a keyboard and keyboards are much less portable. I was then asked to lead worship with the guitar at my small group and that's where I learnt a lot about leading, singing and playing at the same time!

What are your hopes for the next year at First Pres?
One big picture hope I have is that we'll see more and more of God's workings and presence in our midst, so that many more will come to find what Jesus is offering them.

Where are you from?
I was born and raised in Singapore. Seven years ago, I moved to Boston, Massachusetts to go to music school. I moved to Los Angeles in 2004 before coming to Hawaii.

Who's that haole you're always with?
Taylor is my husband and he's from Kirkland, Washington. We met at our church in Boston and were also at the same school. He plays guitar, bass or keyboards for Nightlife, depending on what's needed. I objectively think he's the coolest rock musician I know.

Any other family members?
We have a Siamese cat called Maggie, who's currently still living in Los Angeles with some friends because of quarantine law requirements. We will be able to move her after January. Taylor's parents and two younger sisters live on the Big Island. My parents and siblings live in Singapore.

How do YOU spell "aluminum" and "favorite"?
Well of course, the correct way is "aluminium" and "favourite" but I've learnt to make accommodations for American English.

Leisure activities?
I would snorkel and dive everyday if I could. I love the ocean and all the life that is in it – it's mysterious, interesting, beautiful, scary, unpredictable, all at the same time. I also find that I hear God best when I'm faced with nature. I also love to cook and play video games with Taylor, not at the same time. (Anyone has an XBOX 360 we can borrow?) Taylor has been teaching me to play soccer so I hope that one day, I'll be good enough to join a league with him, and not embarrass him.

What would you do for another career?
Veterinarian, Marine Biologist or similar. Though I don't know if I'd really be any good at them.

Favorite condiment?
Heinz Ketchup – don't leave home without it.

Favorite food?
I love food in general, especially coming from Singapore, though I think eggplant or brinjal (as we call it at home) should be avoided for many reasons. Japanese food, especially sushi and sashimi, is my favorite.

Favorite bands?
U2, Coldplay, Radiohead, Beach Boys

Favorite and preferred Operating System?
Mac OS 10

Favorite movie character?
Edna 'E' Mode from The Incredibles

If you could have a super-power, what would it be?
Teleportation
