About Us

Pastor Dan Chun

Dan Chun has been the Senior Pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Honolulu since 1994. Dan received his M.Div. and D.Min. degrees from Fuller Theological Seminary, M.A. from Univ. of Southern California in Cinema Production from the School of Performing Arts, and a B.S. in Communications from Lewis and Clark College, Portland, Oregon. He is an award winning filmmaker and former TV news reporter for the CBS affiliate in Honolulu. 

Dan is the co-founder and chairman of the board of Hawaiian Islands Ministries (HIM) that has been in existence since 1983. HIM has trained more than 40,000 church/nonprofit leaders in Hawaii and in the San Francisco Bay Area. He has been privileged to speak at international and national Christian conferences, including four years of Promise Keepers stadium events. Dan is on the Board of Trustees of Fuller Theological Seminary, a contributing editor for Leadership Magazine and the President/Chairman of the Board of Ko‘olau Ballrooms and Conference Center.

Pastor Dan previously was an Associate Pastor at Menlo Park Presbyterian Church (SF Bay Area) from 1985 to 1994 and prior to that, was an Associate Pastor at First Presbyterian Church of Honolulu from 1980 to 1985.

He and his wife, Pam, have three children: Noelle, Dylan and Quinn.

What do you like most about your job?
Love meeting and talking and listening to people. Seeing people encounter God in a miraculous healing way. Teaming with members in ministry and seeing great results.


Tell us about your family (siblings, pets, kids, etc.) 

My wife Pam is the co-founder and vice president of Hawaiian Islands Ministries heading up the Communications and Development departments.​ My daughter Noelle lives in San Francisco, and works for Google as a Content Development Manager. Son Dylan is a VP at ​Merrill Lynch as a Portfolio Analystin New York City, while youngest son Quinn will be an intern 2018-19 for Mike Pilavachi at Soul Survivor Church in Watford, England. We have two dogs: Max, a Yorkiepoo, and Molly, a Shih Tzu-Pomeranian.

What is your favorite comfort food? 
Chinese food. Is that comfort food? And I love Italian food. 

What is one of your pet peeves? 

People who cut in line….in front of me. Or those who talk and not listen.


What books are you reading right now? 

Dirty Glory by Pete Greig, Perpetuated in Righteousness by Daniel Kikawa, Social Entrepreneurship: What Everyone Needs to Know by David Bernstein, Susan Davis, The Spirit of the Disciplines by Dallas Willard, Painting for Pleasure by Winston Churchill.


What is your favorite Hawaii Restaurant you would recommend?

Hmmm…depends on what category. I guess mine would be 

Fast food: Kozo Sushi and Zippy’s

Mid-range: California Pizza Kitchen and Sistina’s

Higher-end: Mariposa  and La Mer


Favorite places to get dessert?

Acai Mana Bowl at Diamond Head Cove Bar on Monssarat Ave or at Straub Hospital (seriously).

Menchies frozen yogurt at Ward

Mochi ice cream​ at Whole Foods where you can choose your own.

What is your favorite movie?
Ugh! So many to choose from! 

I’m pretty eclectic. Did I tell you that I went to USC film school?: The Seven Samurai, Train Man, Star Wars IV, Fellowship of the Rings, Sound of Music,​ Schindler’s List, Pride, Moneyball, The Big Short, Zero Dark Thirty, Midway, It’s A Wonderful Life, A Christmas Carol (1951 version), Spotlight, Kingdom of Heaven, and for Netflix - Stranger Things and When Snail Falls in Love.

If you could be a superhero, what would you want your superpowers to be? 
Super Wisdom

Which Hollywood film actor would play you in a movie of your life?

Jet LiAndy Lau, Jackie Chan​ or Takayuki Yamada (from Train Man, one of my favorite foreign films or any film for that matter)
