MariannaMarianna Meachen

My job at First Prez is three-fold. I am the Chaplain of Pastoral Care which means I pray for those who are hurting or in any kind of pain, physical, emotional or mental. As well, I visit those in hospitals, nursing homes or are shut-ins.  I am also the Director of Care Ministries.  This is a new position and will bring together as a body those ministries that were previously called Support Ministries. This includes DivorceCare, GriefShare, Millitary Moms Night Out, the Cancer "Hope" group and the Stephen Ministry program.  Our task is to become more integrated so that we can help people heal. Finally, I am staff liaison to the Deacons.

What do you think you’ll like most about your job?
I love helping people and praying with them.   I love seeing them realize that in the midst of any pain or problem, there is a loving Lord and Savior who is there with them, to support them and provide comfort and peace.  I want them to know they are never alone and there is nothing too big for God to handle if they put their trust and faith in Him.

Tell us about your family (siblings, pets, kids, etc.)
I am the oldest of five girls.  The only brunette of the group.  I had two sons, my oldest Adam, resides in heaven and my youngest, Gabriel lives in Kentucky.  I have two step-children,  Michelle (Marcus) and Chris (Meghan).    They have provided me with four adorable grandchildren, Kainoa 7, Kahea, 5, Jackson, 3 and Abigail, 7 months.  As well, I have two West Highland White Terriers, Joy and Poppy.  I also have a granddog who is living with us right now, Sasha who is half pit bull and half chocolate lab.

What is your favorite comfort food?
My favorite comfort food is wonton min, especially when I’m tired or cold.

What is one of your pet peeves?
I have two that I find particularly irritating, but probably the biggest is people who are perpetually late and don’t respect others time.

What’s the last book you read?

The Complete Guide to Crisis and Trauma Counseling by H. Norman Wright.

What is your favorite Hawaii Restaurant you would recommend?
I love California Pizza Kitchen, but my two favorites are Michelle’s at the Colony Surf and 53 By The Sea.  Both have good food and I love the ambiance the views from both.

What is your favorite movie?
My favorite movie is an old movie that is very schmaltzy.  It’s called Penny Serenade and starred Cary Grant and Irene Dunne.  I love anything with Cary Grant in it. I also love all of the old Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracey movies.  They are classics.

What is your favorite song?

My favorite song has always been George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue.  To me, it has so much complexity and beauty.  It was the first difficult piece I ever had to memorize so it has a special place in my heart.

If you could be a superhero, what would you want your superpowers to be?
If I could be a superhero I would want two superpowers to go hand in hand, wisdom and discernment.

Which Hollywood film actor would play you in a movie of your life?

A Hollywood Film actor to play my life?  Well, since Meryl Streep can transform herself to look like anyone I’d choose her.  It’s just that I’m so short, she’d have to do it on her knees.  Filmmakers would probably choose Sally Field as we’re closer in height.  She’s also very versatile.

Rate yourself on a scale of 1 to 10 how weird you are.

I don’t think I’m weird, so that in itself probably ranks me about a 7 or 8.

We are going through the book, “A Reason for Hope."

From Back of Book: Hope is a strange commodity. When we don’t need it, we rarely think about it. But when we need it, we need as much as we can get. So it is for people who are dealing with cancer. As a chaplain for the Cancer Treatment Centers of America, author and pastor Michael S. Barry has an insider’s undertanding of the cancer patient’s need for A Reason to Hope. With warmth and wisdom, he offers the reader scientific evidence and Scriptural principles that fuel the will to live and build the hope that can heal. If you have cancer - or are in a support role to someone who does - here is A Reason for Hope.
