OUT & ABOUT –– a fellowship group for retired adults (but all ages welcome too!)

the OUT & ABOUT leadership team

When was the last time you visited the Bishop Museum? The Museum was founded in 1889 by Charles Reed Bishop in honor of his late wife Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, the last descendant of the royal Kamehameha family.

Mr. Bishop built the magnificent Polynesian and Hawaiian Halls on the grounds of the original Kamehameha School for Boys. The Museum and the School shared the Kapalama campus until 1940 when a new larger school complex was opened nearby on Kapalama Heights.

Today it is the largest museum in the state and the premier natural and cultural historic institution in the Pacific, recognized throughout the world for its cultural collections, research projects, consulting services, and public educational programs.

And now it’s time to celebrate the story of how a centuries-old ancestral practice has been re-awakened, reactivated, and re envisioned by Hawaiian and oceanic voyagers over the past five decades through their Holo Moana Exhibit. The core content of the exhibit begins with the inspirational sources that sparked the revitalization of long-distance voyaging practices, as well as other key events in the recent history of long-distance voyaging in Hawaii. A focal point will be the completion of the three-year Malama Honua Worldwide Voyage of Hokule’a in 2017. Makana (gifts) received by Hokule’a and her crew from communities around the world will be on public display for the first time.

We will tour the exhibit on our own, and then visit the Planetarium at 11:30 AM for a 25-minute full-dome program that puts you on the deck of the Hokule’a as we explore traditional Polynesian navigation and find out way to Tahiti and Hawaii.

Meet at the "School Groups" entrance.

Kama’aina rates: adults $15, seniors $13, keiki $11.

Lunch at Mexico Restaurant on N. School Street. Menu selections ($19) available when you sign up. Limit of 25 attendees, so sign up early at the Out & About table in the Fellowship Hall on Sunday mornings after the 8AM and 9:30AM services on Feb 18 and Feb 25.

What is OUT & ABOUT?

Out & About is a fellowship group for seniors that hosts events and outings for all ages and stages!

We meet on the last Wednesday of every month and offer a program that aims to nurture the mind, spirit and emotions. We’ve hosted many activities like hikes, piano concerts, a study of early Presbyterian history, hula-sign dancing, and excursions.

And of course, great food is part of our hospitality! We combine events with fellowship around a meal to provide a chance to build bridges with new friends.

Here are some of the activities Out & About has offered: miniature golf • 4th of July celebration • soap-making session • glass-bottom boat cruise • piano concert • barbershop quartet • workshops • Hawaiian luau • hikes • missions presentations • and more!

Do join us at our next event!
